Joan J. Pauley of Columbia, South Carolina passed on February 28th at Prisma Health Richland Hospital. Joan, born August 27, 1932 was the daughter of Rudy and Ida Saltzer and the niece of Freda Sayenga, Lenore Sayenga, Dean Walters, and Annie Spack who played pivotal roles in her life.
Joan was a graduate of Carrick High School (Pittsbrgh, PA), attended Alderson Broaddus College, West Virginia State University (BA Education), and University of Charleston (MS Education with multiple specializations) and retired from both the Kanawha County (WV) and Charleston County (SC) School Districts as a Special Education Teacher.
She was preceded in death by infant daughter Rebecca and is survived by daughters Shirley Hollingsworth (Leonard), Marcia Pauley, and Debra Hunt (Ronald); grandchildren Jon (Jennifer) Hollingsworth, Ben Huey (Andrea Shamblen-Donahue), and Brien Hollingsworth (Kadie Austen); and five great-grandchildren in South Carolina and West Virginia.
Faith, music, reading, and education were passions in Joan’s life and she was a long term member of the Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and represented the Church at multiple functions, she was active in both church and community choirs, volunteered as a guardian ad litem for a number of children in Charleston, SC area, and was active in a number of community support groups. Joan’s lovely alto voice garnered her a speeding ticket when she was enthusiastically singing while driving home after choir practice and exceeded the speed limit.
Cremation services are being handled by J. P. Holley in Columbia, SC and Joan’s ashes will be interred at a future date in Madison, WV near her daughter Rebecca.
