William A. “Bill” Wharton, Sr.

William A. Wharton was born on Dec. 12, 1934, in Abbeville, SC. He passed away at the age of 88 on Jan. 24, 2023, in Columbia, SC. A “Celebration of Life” service for William will be held on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2023 at 11:00am at the Bethel AME Church (819 Woodrow St) in Columbia, SC. The Viewing will be held at the JP Holley Funeral Home (8132 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia SC 29209) on Wednesday February 1 st from 3:00- 5:00pm. The Family will be receiving visitors at 600 Saddlebrook Lane , Hopkins SC 29061, between the hours of 12:00 noon and 8:00pm. William was a veteran of the US Air Force and served 20 years of active duty before retiring. After retiring from the Air Force, William worked at Santee Printworks in Sumter, SC and retired from there as well. After his retirement and before his health declined, William started selling clothes at his leisure in his home and was affectionately known by many as “the Suit Man”. William will be missed by his family and all who knew and loved him. William was preceded in death by his parents, the late John T. Pettigrew and Corrie Thompson Wharton, his sisters: Mary Battle, Permelia Tinch, Eva Wharton, Corrie Dawson and brothers: James Wharton, Joseph Wharton, George Wharton, Harry Wharton. Surviving him is his former Wife, Alma Ware Wharton, Lugoff, SC; His son’s: William A. Wharton Jr. (Linda), Hopkins, SC; Don Wharton, Sumter, SC; Glenn Wharton, Fayetteville, NC; His Daughters: Toni W. Butler (Glen), Linden, TN; Bobbie Wharton, Columbia, SC; Sonya Sanders (Maria), Rockhill, SC; and Tonya Sanders-Commander (Eugene), Blythewood SC; Terri Wharton, Lugoff, SC; 12 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
