Vincent Anthony Cunningham, age 76, passed away on January 30th, 2026, in Columbia, South Carolina.
Vincent was born on March 23rd, 1949, to his Mother Elise Hampton Cunningham, and father, Vincent Anthony Cunningham, in New York City. Vincent would go on to grow up and live in the Washington Heights neighborhood and throughout New York City for much of his life.
He was a graduate of the New York Military Academy in 1967 and attended Northeastern University in Boston until 1972. Vincent went on to have a long and distinguished career with New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, where he dedicated many years of service before retiring in 2011.
Vincent wed the love of his life, Shirley Bowman Cunningham, on August 28th, 2008. After retirement, they settled in Elgin, South Carolina, Shirley’s home state, and where Vincent spent many of his childhood summers with his grandparents and cousins.
Along with his love of fishing, Vincent was an avid sports fan. He could often be found cheering for Florida State, University of South Carolina, the New England Patriots, and the New York Yankees. Sports were a passion he enjoyed sharing with his family and friends. Vincent was loved by many, making friends wherever he went, always ready to offer a word of advice or encouragement.
Vincent was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ambrose Cunningham and Louise Cunningham, and Joe Hampton, Sr., and Ella Vee Davenport Hampton; his parents, Vincent Anthony Cunningham and Elise Hampton Cunningham; his aunts and uncles, Bennie James Avery, Sr., Lillie Bell Hampton, Joe Hampton, Jr., Marie Davis Hampton, H. Leslie Cunningham, and Gerald Cunningham; his stepdaughter, Tamika McCoy; his sister, Gail Cunningham; and his cousins Gerald Hampton, Herman Hampton, and Bennie James Avery, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his son, Brian; his stepsons, Juan, Dwayne, and Erving McCoy; and two grandchildren. He is also survived by his cousins Vassie Hampton Eng, Joe Hampton III, Thomas Hampton, Kaye Hampton, and Sandy Avery-Nubian, who were as close to him as brothers and sisters, along with many loving extended family members and dear friends Jaynell White and Steve Robinson.
