Mary Newton Davis

Obituary: Mary Jayne Newton Davis was born to the late Walter and Martha Johnson Newton on November 12, 1929. On Monday July 31, 2017, God called her home. She was the eldest of four children. Mary was known as "MaryJayne" only to family and close friends. She received her early education in the public schools of Richland County. Mary Jayne graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1949. In 1953, she received her Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education. Mary Jayne was a High School Social Studies teacher for Richland County Public Schools from 1954 - 1962. She taught at Booker T. Washington High School, as well as, Hopkins High School. Mary Jayne moved to New York City where she had several jobs in the education field. She had a career change in 1965 when she became a therapist for Mount Sinai Hospital. She retired from Mount Sinai Hospital in 1991. She moved to Atlanta, Georgia in November of 1991 to be closer to family Mary Jayne joined St. John Baptist Church at an early age and later worshiped at Saint Phillip AME Church in Atlanta, Georgia. She was also a member of the Saint Phillip's senior group. She attended faithfully until her health declined. Mary Jayne met, fell in love with the lateHaratalous (Dave) Davis. They were united In Holy Matrimony on June 10, 1961 in Hopkins, South Carolina. From this union two children were born: Dave Davis and Marsha Davis. Mary Jayne loved to Mary Jayne was a member of the YultidersInc. in New York. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society at Saint Phillip AME Church. Mary Jayne was preceded in death by her mother Martha J. Newton; father Walter Newton; husband Haratalous Davis; brother Willie J. Newton; sister-in-law Priscilla M. Newton; brother-in-law Willie Frank Stocker; sister Eloise N. Stocker; brother-in-law Reggie Howard; and grandson Devon Wyatt. Mary Jayne leaves wonderful memories for many to cherish. Her family include:her son Dave Davis, Baltimore, Maryland; daughter Marsha Davis (Ronnie), Atlanta, Georgia; sister Lucile N. Howard (Reggie deceased); Atlanta, Georgia;grandson Terrence Jones, Raleigh, North Carolina; granddaughter Cheyenne Davis, Baltimore, Maryland; granddaughter Mone't Briana Davis, Atlanta, Georgia; grandson Davin Wyatt, Atlanta, Georgia. A host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Services: Funeral Service for Mrs. Mary Newton Davis, will be held 11:00 am Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017 at the St. John Baptist Church (Hopkins, SC) with Internment to follow in the Church Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to the JP Holley Funeral Home- Columbia Chapel.
