LLOYD JOSEPH MCGRIFF
On February 12, 2023, Lloyd Joseph McGriff heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me and rest.” He was born on Oct. 11, 1926 in Winnsboro, SC, the son of two loving parents, the late John and Cora Henry. He was the ninth of ten children. He grew up in a loving environment where caring for your neighbor was second nature. At an early age, His journey in Christ began when he joined St. John AME Church in Winnsboro, SC. His love for church and family enabled him to build upon his faith and discipline.
Lloyd was married for 56 years to the late Ms. Vivian Rabb McGriff. He was an extremely dedicated and loving husband, always fostering a pleasant homelife. From this union they had two devoted children, Lloyd (Trevor), and Conchetta.
Lloyd was an humble, multi-talented, and calm-spirited man filled with wisdom. He loved to have fun with family and friends and always enjoyed stimulating conversations. He constantly shared his life lessons and wisdom with his children, grandchildren, and their friends. His talent and passion to use his hands were evident in his contribution to building factories, schools, churches, banks, and other brick structures in his hometown, neighboring counties, and throughout the east coast. His commitment to his artistry enabled him to enjoy a rewarding and active career in building construction for sixty years.
During his career, he worked as a foreman but especially enjoyed being a hands-on brick mason. His commitment to hard work and dedication afforded him many work opportunities with the McGriff Brothers, other family members, and fellow brick masons. He was employed for thirty of his sixty years of brick masonry with one company, Pety Construction.
His preliminary education journey began in Winnsboro, SC. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1944. He attended Voorhees Junior College (presently called Voorhees College) in Denmark, SC with a concentration in Building Construction. He served two years in the United States Army (Arkansas and Germany) during the Korean War. After Lloyd completed his tour of duty he continued to work in building construction with a specialty in brick, stone, rock, tile and carpentry. His discipline may be attributed to a generation of individuals whose work ethic influenced his life. Those pioneer predecessors include his father, John; Uncle Charlie (Cheeper); deceased siblings, and sister (Izetta). After many active years of rising early and getting the job done, he remained the ultimate outdoorsman. His hobbies included gardening, hunting, playing checkers, relaxing, and sharing fun times with his grandchildren, relatives, church family, and friends. Lloyd was an avid lover of the game show, ‘Family Feud,’ and every evening he enjoyed all the fun and laughter with his family as they all competed to get the right answers.
Lloyd held various positions in his hometown. He was the first African American appointed to the Fairfield County School Board, and as a result of this major accomplishment, he received an award in 2019 as a Hall of Fame Inductee for the Fairfield County School District . He held this position for two terms and was appointed by the late Senator Martin and Representative Benjamin (Ben) Hornsby. He served for many years in several capacities at St. John AME Church which included Stewart, Trustee, and Chairman of the Trustee Board. In addition, he drew plans and supervised the construction of St. John’s Christian education building.
He leaves to cherish his memory his children, the Rev. Dr. Lloyd T. McGriff (Monica) and Conchetta McGriff-Belgrave (Carl); four grandchildren, Lloyd T. McGriff II (Trevar), Aaron, Gabriele, and Johnathan; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving relatives.
