Larry John Pauly passed away at home September 13, 2026 surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Ashland, Ohio December 29, 1942 to Edward and Clara Pauly, spending his youth living and helping out on his family’s dairy farm. Later he graduated from Ohio State with a degree in engineering.
As he found his footing in the engineering field and explored his options, he worked for a summer in Nuremberg, Germany at Siemens. During this time, he bicycled through Europe staying at youth hostels and made time for one of his passions, mountain climbing. Later, he also spent some months doing motion studies at a Kentucky coal mine before settling into a 35 year career as a welding engineer specializing in quality control at nuclear power plants.
Surpassing his secular pursuits, though, was the happiness he found in studying the Bible and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1974 in Roanoke, Virginia. He volunteered on many Kingdom Hall construction projects, hanging drywall and installing vinyl siding. He was never afraid of getting his hands dirty and spent countless hours in his garden with his trusty tiller or tinkering around the house and working on do-it-yourself projects. After all that hard work, dessert was his favorite part of any meal, probably a throwback to all the wonderful pies his mom made on the Paradise Hill farm. His playful but shrewd side was seen when playing cards with friends and family, easily winning even in his later years.
He is survived by his daughters Alia Sanchez (Daniel), Sarah Strickland(Jason) and Anne Deleon(Ismar) as well as his beloved grandchildren Josie and Harrison and by his brother Philip Pauly. He was predeceased by his wife Sharon and two brothers, Dave and Kenny. Memorial services will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses Newberry SC or via Zoom (ID: 8924270970 PIN: 63923779). Special thanks are given to the wonderful team of hospice nurses at MSA Hospice who did all they could to make his final days more peaceful and comfortable.
