Our hearts are filled with love and gratitude as we celebrate the life of our father, James Jeffery Van Gaither, affectionately known as “Van.” Born in Winnsboro, South Carolina (Fairfield County) on January 20, 1958, Van passed peacefully on October 10, 2025, in Columbia, South Carolina.
Van was a man whose presence lit up every room strong, confident, and full of joy and laughter. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and joyful great-grandfather who worked hard, laughed often, and loved with his whole heart. To his family, he was a steady rock and a constant source of humor, wisdom, and pride.
He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures the thrill of souped-up fast cars, the rhythm of good old-school music, and the satisfaction of being a phenomenal competitive pool player. Every pastime reflected his bold personality and his zest for living life to the fullest.
Van’s legacy lives on through his wife, Dorethea Gaither, and his beloved daughters, Tamika Brown, Tamitra (Steven) Davis, Takesha Brown, and Tacheka (Thomas) Grim. His greatest joy was his family his grandchildren, Cameron, Alexia, Isaiah, Braylon, Quarterrio, Roman, Bryson, Ashton, London, Ava, Autumn, and his precious great-granddaughter, Nova.
He is preceded in death by his father, Mr. James Mack, and now joins him in eternal rest. Van is also survived by his devoted mother, Helen Gaither Washington; his sisters, Cynthia Gaither, Sylvia (Larry) Washington Beaver, Shanna Washington, and Adonta (Gregory) Washington Green; his brothers, Timothy Washington and Vincent (Lisa) Washington; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him for his laughter that could brighten any day, his stories that kept us smiling, and the love he poured into everyone around him. His spirit will live on in every hug, every smile, and every cherished memory.
We will forever remember the strong, big-hearted man who showed us what it means to live with purpose, to work with pride, and to love without limits. Thank you, Dad, for every smile, every lesson, and every memory.
“We rode this thing called life until the wheels fell off. Cheers to a life well lived…Van Gaither!”
Forever loved. Forever celebrated.
