Obituary: Clarence Vernon Brooks was born March 30, 1955, in Sumter, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Clarence and Maggie Oxendine Brooks. On Monday, April 23, 2018, he made a peaceful transition to his eternal home. Affectionately known as Vernon to family and friends, was reared in the home of his grandparents, he was the center of their joy due to his limited abilities. Clarence spent most of his adult life as a resident in the Sumter County DSN. He was later transferred to Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton, South Carolina, where he resided until his passing at McLeod Hospital in Manning, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by: his parents; his maternal grandparents, Reverend William and Azalee Oxendine; his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Geretha Brooks; and a nephew, Gerald L. Lewis, Jr. Clarence Vernon Brooks is survived by: one brother, Kenneth L. (Anita) Brooks, of Lithonia, GA; three sisters, Sandra B. Johnson, Karen B. Bradford, both of Lithonia, GA, and Genina L. Lewis, of Rock Hill, SC; two nieces, Laya and Satira; four nephews, Tijuan, Orlando, Allen, and Brenden; two uncles, James (Eloise) Brooks and John (Maggie) Oxendine; three aunts, Louise O. Wright, Geraldine O. Hogan, and Reverend Delores (Roosevelt) Harris; five grandnieces and grandnephews; a host of other loving relatives and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly. Services: Funeral services for Clarence Vernon Brooks, Jr. will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church, Sumter, SC, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the church.
