Obituary

Carl Nelson Smith went to be with our Lord Jesus on June 2, 2020.  Born April 18, 1947 Nelson was a resident of Gilbert, South Carolina and was formerly of Eau Gallie, Florida.  Nelson had been in declining health since November of 2019.  Nelson was a carpenter by trade with a love for art, hunting, and fishing as a professional bass fisherman.  Nelson was a well-known graphic illustrator constructing artistic animation of manned space flights.  Nelson loved to write songs playing the guitar, electric organ, and piano.  Nelson served as a State Park Ranger at Sabastian Inlet, Florida for two to three years.  Nelson was preceded in death by his parents Carl M. Smith, Jr. and Elizabeth ‘Lib’ Jones Smith.  Nelson is survived by his children Carl William Smith, and Tonya Elaine Smith of Gilbert, South Carolina; Grandchildren Michael Smith, James ‘Jimmy’ Smith, Clara Elaine Smith, Heather E. Smith, Bryan Walker; step daughters Susan F. Hayes, and Sarah E. Hayes; great grandchildren Violet Reyes, Hayden Smith and fourteen step grandchildren; brothers Calvin (Alice) Baxter Smith, Terry W. Smith, Sr.; sisters Pamela (Marcus) Hamden, and Becky Jo Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.  The family wishes to express their heart felt gratitude to the health care professional who gave care and comfort to Nelson during his period of declining health including a social worker Louise Stepp.  Due to the requirements of social distancing currently in effect the family will simply enjoy expression of love made on the Tribute Wall of the J. P. Holley Funeral Home.  Cremation shall occur according to Nelson’s wishes.
