Barbara Jean Green

February 22, 1942 — April 21, 2023

Barbara Jean (Sauda) Green was born on February 22, 1942, in Columbia, SC, to the late Evelyn Crumpton Green and William James Green. She passed away peacefully at Prisma Health Parkridge Hospital on April 21, 2023.Barbara was educated in Richland County public schools and was a 1960 graduate of C. A. Johnson High School. Upon graduation, she enrolled at Allen University and graduated with a degree in elementary education. Barbara left the Columbia area upon graduation and worked as a teacher in rural South Carolina for a short while before moving to Philadelphia, PA, and entering the field of social work. After many years in Philadelphia, she moved back to Columbia, SC, to teach at her high school alma mater as a special education teacher. Social work, however, called her back, and her career with the South Carolina Department of Social Services carried her from case worker to adoption specialist and finally state diversity trainer. She retired from DSS after 31 years to help raise her two grandsons, Nigel and Jacobi. Her passion for African art and fashion was unmatched. She maintained an amazing collection of both and was a sharp dresser! She was an amazing cook and baker, known for her carrot and rum cakes. She loved to garden and sew. Her garden won several "Best of" neighborhood garden awards in the Five Points area. She was an especially loving and giving grandmother to ;Her Boys, Nigel and Jacobi, and an amazing aunt to her great-niece Claire and great-nephew Will. She leaves to mourn her passing her two grandsons, Nigel Simmons and Jacobi Green, and a devoted sister, Dorothy Hancock, of the home. Dorothy was by her side and took care of her during her illnesses. She also raised her beloved Lynn while she was away forging her career. She was the epitome of what a good sister should be. A niece, Lorraine Hancock Williams; a nephew, Anthony (Princess) Hancock; and a great-niece, Claire Amani (Albert) Washington Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her cherished only daughter Evelyn (Lynn) Green; her nephew Willis C. Williams, Sr.; and her great-nephew Willis C. Williams II. We, the family, would like to thank the hospice team at Prisma Health Parkridge Hospital for their tireless efforts in the care of our loved one. You are greatly appreciated. Many thanks to the caring staff at the J. P. Holley Funeral Home for their attention to Barbara. May the angels greet her with open arms.
